Lumber Smith - A True Portable Sawmill

Engines and Blades for Your Lumber Smith Portable Sawmill

The Right Engine!

We use the Honda 5.5 hp Model# GX160HX2 engine . This is a great engine and, for us, it starts on the first pull most times. The engine is a Honda Commercial engine and has a 6:1 gear reduction ratio. It weighs about 28 pounds.

Blades

Sawmill blades can be re-sharpened with a Dremel tool (see the video links for more information) but it is always good to have spare blades ready to go. Blades tend to wear at the tooth offset and have a limited life. Resetting the offset of a blade can be difficult as the tooth is very hard and may break.

We offer 2 styles of sawmill blade. They are:

The .75” – This blade is .035” thick, 1.125” deep, has a .75” tooth set and is 93.75” long.
The .50” – This blade is .035” thick, 1.125” deep, has a .50” tooth set and is 94” long.

The .75” blade is an excellent utility blade. All saws are shipped with this blade.

The .50” blade is likewise an excellent blade. It leaves a cleaner surface on the material but cuts about 10% to 20% slower than the .75”.

The Lumber Smith Sawmill can use blades from 1.125" inch deep to 1.25" deep. Blade length must be 92.75" to 94.5". The tooth set, space from the tooth point to the next tooth point, can be .375” to .875”. We recommend either a bi-metal or carbon steel blade.
