| Meet Clint Wisdom. Clint is our latest Smither-of-the-Month.
Clint is originally from Wray, Colorado; his wife is from St. Francis, Kansas. Clint purchased his Lumber Smith Sawmill in August, 2010. At that time, I (Eddy) thought Clint was an interesting purchaser but I did not know the entire story. We shipped the sawmill to Kansas and a few weeks later Clint called – I thought the call would be just another Q/A call about sawmill assembly. The conversation focused on transporting the sawmill to Costa Rica. I may have mentioned my June Costa Rica trip to Clint when he purchased the sawmill. We discussed shipping, the borders, etc. From Clint - I was fishing for information about how to get it into the country without paying a huge tax.
A few months later, Clint and I exchanged emails. I was planning another trip to Costa Rica during January, 2011 and wanted to meet him while there. I frequently see sawmill owners while traveling.
Clint and I exchanged several more emails and we met for breakfast near the San Jose, CR Airport.
The rest of the story…
Clint is a Christian Missionary living and working in Costa Rica. The area around San Jose has many Nicaraguan refugee families from their civil war in the 1980's. One of Clint’s ministries is to provide financial support for over 200 Nicaraguan children so they may attend school. While Costa Rica schools are free, all students must have a school uniform. Clint and his supporters provide school uniforms and other financial support to the children from time to time.
The northeast area of Costa Rica near the Nicaragua border, likewise; has many Nicaraguan refuge families. Their ministry helped start two churches near the border of Nicaragua. He and the congregation are building the church and a small home using the sawmill.
If all of this were not enough, Clint and his wife have 9 children.
Clint and family have been in Costa Rica for 7 years and have no plans to return...but who knows (according to Clint)? There is no way to anticipate what adventures he and his family will have and how many lives they will touch – by example and opportunities they facilitate.
At the close of our breakfast, Dee (my wife) and I counted ourselves among those Clint has touched and we are better for it.
From Clint - We had an interesting rainy season and it has been hard to get in and just cut because of the weather and mud. Normally, there are a few months where it is hot and dry. It looks like we will be using some oxen to pull the logs out into the open where we can or take the mill into the hills where we can't. This should make for some good pictures! Also, most of the trees we cut have fallen or have been struck by lightning and are dead so we are "recycling" the majority of trees.
